The U.S. Department of Transportation has released its updated version of its autonomous vehicle policy: Ensuring American Leadership in Automated Vehicle Technologies: Automated Vehicles 4.0.  The update builds upon Preparing for the Future of Transportation: Automated Vehicles 3.0 and unifies efforts in automated vehicles across 38 Federal departments, independent agencies, commissions, and executive offices of the president, providing high-level guidance to state and local governments, innovators, and all stakeholders on the U.S. government’s approach towards AVs.  AV 4.0 is structured around the following three key AV principles:

  1. Prioritize safety and security,
  2. Promote innovation, and
  3. Ensure a consistent regulatory approach.

AV 4.0 seeks to ensure a consistent governmental approach to AV technologies, and to detail the authorities, research, and investments being made across the government so that the United States can continue to lead AV technology research, development, and integration.

AV 4.0 will also be published in the Federal Register for public review and comment.
